boy I love you
like fireworks that burst in July heat
cuz they just can’t take it no more
like sparklers that crackle and glitter
and singe my fingers just
oh
so
ever
so
slightly
like goosbumps on my arm in a movie theatre
while the AC blasts and you
slide your hand over mine
like steam coming off of wet sidewalks
rising ever rising
like wave upon wave of Atlantic surf
and the thrill of the freezing salt on my calves
like flip-flop drumbeats
and cicada ballads
twirling skirts on sundresses and supersoaker battles
hibiscus that explode open
and skin slick with sunscreen
boy I love you
through summer and beyond
